The public prosecutor's office has officially closed its investigation into two police officers suspected of drug offenses, citing insufficient evidence of organised drug trafficking and the relatively small quantities seized during house searches.

Approximately 14 and 26 grams of cannabis, respectively, were discovered during searches of the officers' homes. Both of them were suspended from duty and an investigation launched against them.

"Only small quantities were confiscated," a spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office told the Luxemburger Wort on Monday.

While the possession and consumption of cannabis are legal under specific conditions, the officers were found in possession of drugs that were illegally sourced in Luxembourg.

Former RTL editor-in-chief Guy Kaiser initially reported on the conclusion of the criminal proceedings in his blog.

According to the public prosecutor's office, one officer was suspected of having used the drugs solely for personal consumption, while the other was suspected of distributing them. Despite these claims were ultimately deemed not criminally relevant.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) stumbled upon the drugs case while investigating a separate incident of alleged police violence. Suspicions arose during the analysis of other officers' cell phones, leading to subsequent house searches. The two officers, who had been suspended pending the investigation, have now been reinstated by the interior security ministry.

The officer in possession of the larger amount of cannabis was stationed at the capital's train station at the time of the house search, while the other officer had previously worked there before relocating to an office in the north.

Four other police officers from the Gare police station are still under investigation for their alleged involvement in a suspected case of police violence. They are accused of mistreating a intoxicated individual in a cell in late May, with subsequent attempts to cover up the incident. After more than two months in custody, the four accused officers have been conditionally released.

The unit at the main train station has been disbanded. The office remains operational, however, with security responsibilities now transferred to the capital's central police station in Verlorenkost.
