Luxembourg’s lawmaker Fernand Kartheiser will lead the conservative-nationalist Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR) into this June’s election to select members of the European Parliament.
The party’s six-member slate introduced on Friday is topped by 64-year-old Kartheiser, who has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2013 and previously served as an army officer and Luxembourg’s ambassador to Greece, Cyprus and Romania.
The ADR list also includes fellow members of the national parliament Jeff Engelen, 73, and 35-year-old Alexandra Schoos. Also running are former party vice president Sylvie Mischel, 57, lawyer Alex Penning, 49, and 48-year-old lawyer Véronique Stoffel.
The ADR came in fifth place among Luxembourg’s political parties during the last European elections in 2019 with around 10% of the vote, not enough for a seat in Strasbourg. The party won 9.3% of votes during Luxembourg’s national elections in October, giving it five seats out of 60 in the Chamber of Deputies.
